about

The Red Gate is a community space, a self-managed and independent cultural center operated by and for low-income and otherwise marginalized artists and musicians. Our roots in Vancouver's downtown eastside go back more than 30 years, and as a formally constituted non-profit organization since 2012, when a series of closures of beloved DIY spaces in the neighborhood forced us to organize to fight for the survival of our critically endangered cultural habitat. Other than a single crowd-funding campaign that summer, in which we raised enough money to lease a suitable industrial-zoned building, we have operated for the last 6 years on an entirely self sufficient basis, paying the bills with a combination of affordable rentals and community events, and zero government grants.

Earlier this year we found ourselves within the blast zone of yet another condo development, and began the all too familiar process of searching for a new space. We've been fortunate enough to find one (at 1965 Main St., former home of VIVO and more recently VAL,) that is in many ways an upgrade to the one we were just evicted from, unfortunately including a substantial upgrade in the rent (about 75% on per-square-foot basis.) What this means is that all of the gains that we've made as an organization, in our efforts towards economic self-sufficiency and sustainability, have been absorbed by the rapidly increasing costs of simply existing in Vancouver, leaving very little remaining for improving and expanding the range of services we're able to offer.

We're currently exploring options for increasing our revenues without substantially raising our prices (which would ultimately defeat the purpose of the whole project.) As a first effort in this direction, we asked all of the bands that rehearse here, or that have members that are otherwise directly involved in running the space, to contribute a track to a compilation album. The response was excellent in terms of quality and quantity, 38 tracks which cover an incredibly broad range of styles and genres, and which, taken together, provides a fascinating cross-section/snapshot of Vancouver's independent/experimental/underground music scene circa summer 2018. We think the Vancouver music scene is better than its ever been, but also incredibly fragile due to the raw economics of trying to survive in one of the world's most unaffordable cities. Despite the current "creative exodus" there's still a lot of amazing talent in this town (so much that we're already planning a "volume 2") and we're committed to do everything we can to support and promote it.

But don't take our word for it! All tracks are streamable, and the full download is available for a donation of $10 or more to the Red Gate Arts Society. Donations of $20 or more include a double cassette box set containing all tracks, released in a numbered edition of 300 copies, sure to be a highly sought-after future collector's item! We'll be using the money to replace and repair our aging equipment, and to improve our infrastructure in various ways, starting with the development of a community-access space for meetings, workshops, and exhibitions, including sound and projection equipment and a digital- and screen-printing facility. We also plan to improve our capacity to record and stream live events, and to develop a Red Gate media channel to help bring the Vancouver underground out of the shadows and into the spotlight.

Thanks in advance! xox from RedG8!
